It's not becoming a new game all of a sudden. None of what you practice will stop being useful. None of your skills are going to suddenly be irrelevant. This new update didn't nearly impact my playstyle as much as the two-handed crossbow update did. So it has some good (curses!), it has some bad (stat parity), and it has some inconsequential / annoying (new malaise).įor the record, I do think the new malaise can work, but it definitely needs some fine-tuning if they're hoping it creates for a more challenging game than before.Īnd for reference, I've been playing since 1.1. Nothing makes me giddier than running into a random cursed chest in the PQ, the Promenade, Ossuary, and Slumbering Sanctuary all in the same run! On the plus side, we're seeing many more cursed chests in this update than we have over the past 6. I'm not calling for brutality to get nerfed rather, I'm calling for survival and tactics to get buffed so that they're as fun to play. Brutality, in contrast, is far more forgiving and flexible.įortunately, the developers already said that survival will be getting some love in the next update, and I can only hope they reconsider tactics. I can advance with both of them, but the paths forward for those stats are a little harder and more challenging than before the update unless you get stupidly lucky with a synergistic build. What I don't like about this update is that tactics and survival feel woefully inadequate next to brutality, and so I'm feeling funneled into brutality nearly every single time my run begins. I also find the new mechanic forcing me to backtrack to pick up scrolls I left behind, weapons, or challenge runes, and so it certainly isn't saving me any more time. I've played more recklessly than I ever have, and I'm not getting punished for it, making it easier to progress to late game biomes. We can now take more hits than ever before, which also decreases the challenge. I'm also not really noticing the increase in enemy speed to add any additional challenge most of them advertise their strikes with plenty of time to dodge, and those who are already hopped up on caffeine (runner) have behaviors that are familiar enough that they're predictable.Īs an aside, the spawning enemies crack me up because they come into the game with a stupid speech bubble, like, "Hey you!" I'm just like. If anything, at high malaise it gets more tedious because they spawn in more frequently, and so sometimes feels like a repetitive task for me that disrupts my flow for 1-2 sec every 5-10 sec. Enemies spawn in at a rate as slow as molasses, and by the time they materialize, I usually have destroyed them. Regarding the new malaise, I'm actually finding it fairly inconsequential as a mechanic. So that kind of shows you were my sado-masochistic mind goes. That's just people feeling inadequate because they didn't max scroll counts. I finished plenty of runs without optimal weapon scrolls. People complained about " needing to reroll for stats," but that wasn't a requirement. I'm going to have a different take than most, I think.įor one, I loved scrolls on weapons because it introduced a new variable into builds, increasing strength while also increasing reliance on randomness. Maybe it's just me though? Since, like I said, a lot of changes have been good It give players time to justify getting good at a "meta", but also give the devs more time to refine and really think through the changes they make. Maybe more time between update likes would be good. Sure, I can't knock it until I try it, but the general vibe about this update has me pretty worried, like, maybe I want a rollback feature for consoles. This has me feeling extra bad about my issues with the "meta" changes. Changes to the current malaise mechanic has been overdue, but it sounds like most people are saying this is not the way. The malaise update is coming to consoles soon(I'm a switch player btw), and I've been hearing almost nothing good. Yes some of the changes have been really good, like removing scrolls from weapons, but the frequency of big changes like this, or the shifting of weapon colors, really starts to screw with my play and makes me not want to practice. With the last couple updates, this leads me to feel like it's pointless to get good at a current "meta" because in a few weeks it will have been moslty pointless. I play, get better with current mechanics and genral strategies, but then I see a new update coming in a few weeks, and I realize a lot of skills I built up are now going to be useless. However, I can't help but feel like with some of the major changes that just keep coming, it gets a little overwhelming. Don't get me wrong, I love the work that goes into this game, and all the new weapons, skins, enemies, and stages.
